Summary

The TAMRON 16-30mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 is a fast wide-angle zoom for full-frame Sony E and Nikon Z cameras, evolving the earlier 17-28mm with a wider range. It keeps a constant f/2.8 maximum aperture from 16 to 30mm, so photographers can work in available light and control depth of field without the exposure shifting as they zoom. TAMRON presents it within its lineup as a compact alternative to traditional 2.8 wide zooms.

Its optical construction uses 16 elements in 12 groups, with one XLD, two LD and three glass-molded aspherical elements, plus BBAR G2 coatings and a fluorine repellent layer on the front element. The nine-blade diaphragm covers f/2.8 to f/16, focusing is handled by a fast, quiet VXD linear motor, and the zoom is internal, so the barrel length stays the same as the focal length changes. Minimum focus distance is 19 centimetres at the wide end, with 0.185× maximum magnification, and the filter thread is 67mm.

At 440 grams, 74.8mm in diameter and 101.8mm long in the Sony E version, the TAMRON 16-30mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 is sealed against dust and moisture and includes a configurable Fn button plus a USB-C port for firmware updates through Tamron Lens Utility. It has no optical stabilisation and no aperture ring. It is a practical option for architecture, landscape, travel, urban reportage and handheld or gimbal video work.
