Summary

The Sigma 50mm f/1.4 CL DG from Sigma introduces a brand-new CL lineage into the celebrated all-metal I series, purpose-built for creators prioritizing tactile mechanical handling and vintage aesthetic soul alongside modern autofocus performance. Designed for full-frame mirrorless camera systems across native Leica L and Sony E mounts, this 50mm standard prime provides an authentic, versatile perspective that excels in fine-art portraiture, candid street reportage, travel, and environmental documentary work.

Its bright fast f/1.4 maximum aperture is paired with an unprecedented 14-blade circular diaphragm engineered to maintain perfectly circular out-of-focus highlights and render soft, painterly background transitions when stopped down. Optically, it integrates 9 elements in 6 groups, utilizing 1 FLD glass element and 3 high-precision aspherical elements. Rather than chasing clinical benchmark sharpness alone, Sigma intentionally tuned residual aberrations through rigorous computational simulations to impart a gentle, flattering softness to the in-focus plane wide open, producing organic textural warmth and striking three-dimensionality.

Weighing an astonishing 375 grams and measuring just 65mm in diameter by 54mm in length with a standard 52mm filter thread, the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 CL DG is remarkably more compact than conventional Art-series primes. It introduces Sigma's proprietary RDD (Rotary Direct Drive) autofocus actuator—wrapping linear HLA coils and magnets into a slim ring around the barrel to drive the entire optical assembly—and incorporates engraved distance and depth-of-field scales, a tactile clicked aperture ring, weather-resistant sealing with a water and oil repellent front coating, and the signature magnetic metal lens cap.
